Mint Sauce, the lager-loving sheep, upended Dulwich’s Grove pub in the 1980s, shocking locals and visitors alike. With a taste for Hoffmeister lager and garden antics, this woolly icon became South London’s quirkiest taproom tale. “Never seen so much turkey,” joked one paper.

After Mint Sauce’s lager-fueled reign, The Grove pub’s closure in 2014 left Dulwich reeling. The building, once a family-friendly hub with rabbits, guinea pigs, and sheep, now sits empty—its only regulars skateboarders in the car park. “Pubs tell you so much about social history,” Cullen notes.

In 1972, The Grove was nearly crowned Pub of the Year—thanks in part to its sheep, Mint Sauce, and a carvery reportedly bigger than most turkeys.
