Mexico's Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has suspended dolphin shows at Riviera Maya's Hotel Barceló following a tragic incident where a dolphin leapt onto concrete during a performance, resulting in its death. This event has intensified scrutiny of dolphinariums, with activists condemning them as 'prisons' and calling for their closure across the nation.

The incident at Hotel Barceló has sparked widespread protests, with organizations like Dolphin Freedom MX orchestrating demonstrations in cities including Cancún and Mexico City. Despite a 2022 amendment to the General Wildlife Law prohibiting marine mammals in entertainment, many facilities continue operations, exploiting legal loopholes and citing economic dependencies.

Mexico houses approximately 31 dolphinariums across nine states, with nearly half located in Quintana Roo, collectively holding between 342 to 500 dolphins in captivity.
