Wild Elephant Raids Thai Grocery Store, Devours Snacks, Leaves Muddy Tracks

Plai Biang Lek, a 30-year-old wild elephant, surprised locals by entering a grocery store near Khao Yai National Park in northeastern Thailand. Ignoring attempts to deter him, he consumed nine bags of sweet rice crackers, a sandwich, and dried bananas, leaving muddy tracks and ceiling damage.
After his snack, Plai Biang Lek calmly exited the store, leaving behind amused shop owner Kamploy Kakaew. Known for entering homes in search of food, this was his first foray into a commercial establishment, highlighting the increasing human-elephant interactions due to habitat loss.
Thailand's wild elephant population was estimated at 4,000 in 2024, with human-elephant conflicts becoming more common as agricultural expansion encroaches on their habitats.
