Las Vegas police unveiled 10 Tesla Cybertrucks for tactical use, saying the vehicles would keep officers safer during armed standoffs across the city.
At the announcement, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the trucks would protect officers because they are bulletproof, unlike the department’s standard patrol cars.
That claim quickly fell apart. The company that modified the vehicles confirmed the Cybertruck doors are factory stock, with no added ballistic reinforcement.
The UP FIT founder said in a promotional video, “The vehicle does not need added ballistic doors because the doors already have ballistic protection from the factory.”
Independent testing shows otherwise. Multiple tests have sent common rifle and handgun rounds straight through Cybertruck doors and glass with little resistance.
The confusion traces back to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who once called the truck bulletproof, then later warned it was easy to shoot through. Officers are now expected to duck.
