Margaret Denardo, 43, was driving from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire on September 26 when a rest stop revealed her cat Ray Ray sitting on the van roof.
The family had already covered more than 100 miles over two hours. Ray Ray was tucked beside the luggage carrier above the moving vehicle.
Denardo was traveling with her husband Tony, 49, their daughter Sophia, and three of Sophia’s friends. Everyone assumed the eight year old cat was safely at home.
"I was beyond shocked and terrified for him," Denardo said. "I kept thinking of all the terrible things that could have happened but he was so unfazed."
Ray Ray is an indoor outdoor cat known for roaming. Denardo found him as a kitten under her van eight years ago on their farm in Kittanning, Pennsylvania.
Instead of turning back, the family brought Ray Ray along to Keene for a marathon, then on to New York City. They stopped at a pet store first, because every road trip needs a cat.
