Beagle's Bark Thwarts Bear Attack on Japanese Monk

In Niigata, Japan, Tougen Yoshihara, abbot of Youkoku Temple, was ambushed by a 1.6-meter bear during a walk with Chiko, his one-year-old beagle. Despite Yoshihara's muscular build, he felt helpless until Chiko's loud barking and aggressive charge scared the bear off, showcasing the dog's unexpected bravery.
Chiko, previously abandoned for being too noisy, had been adopted by Yoshihara just before the incident. This act of heroism underscores the importance of not dismissing beagles for their loud nature, as their vocal tendencies can be life-saving in critical situations.
Remarkably, Chiko chased the bear into the woods and returned home 30 minutes later, appearing proud of his courageous act.
