A thief returned two stolen mandolins to Lark Street Music in Teaneck, New Jersey, days after taking them, according to the store and police.
The instruments came back on December 29 with a handwritten note that read, "SORRY, I BEEN DRUNK, MERRY CHRISTMAS You are good man," the shop said.
Owner Buzzy Levine, who opened the store in 1981, told ABC News he was stunned. "I could not believe it. This is like some weird movie with a happy ending."
The mandolins were taken on December 22 after surveillance video showed the suspect stuffing them under a parka and walking out, prompting the store to ask the public for help.
Levine said he saw the person quietly return the instruments in shopping bags, chased him briefly down the street, then called 911 after losing sight of him.
The Gibson F 12 and Weber Yellowstone were valued at $3,500 and $4,250, and Teaneck police say no arrests have been made, leaving the case closed by conscience instead of cuffs.
