1 black bear crawls under Altadena California home after wildfire

A black bear has taken up residence in the crawl space beneath a home in Altadena, California, leaving homeowner Ken Johnson, 63, with an unexpected roommate. Johnson spotted the bear on video Tuesday after months of empty footage. He installed the camera in June when he noticed damage under his house. “It’s a huge bear,” Johnson said. “It’s really unnerving because I don’t know if he’s going to tear everything up under there.” He said the animal is taller than a table. Altadena sits northeast of Los Angeles near the Angeles National Forest. A January wildfire burned large areas of the foothills, pushing wildlife toward neighborhoods and homes. State officials say bears often seek crawl spaces for denning, a behavior where they take long naps but wake to eat. California Department of Fish and Wildlife teams can respond to up to five such calls a week. The bear has growled at Johnson, raided trash cans Sunday evening, and vanished back underground. Johnson joked his backup plan involves dinner rolls, sandbags, and hope.
