A 31 year old man was rushed to Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi with severe abdominal pain after inserting a live eel into his body earlier that day.
Doctors ordered ultrasound and X ray scans and were stunned to see the eel skeleton inside the abdominal cavity, not the rectum where it was expected.
A specialist team attempted removal through endoscopy but found the passage blocked. The patient had inserted a large lemon after the eel, making access impossible.
Surgeons moved to emergency surgery and found the eel alive, measuring about 65 cm long and 10 cm in circumference, according to the Hindustan Times.
"The eel had bitten through the patient’s rectum and colon to escape into the abdominal cavity," said Le Nhat Huy, vice director of colorectal and perineal surgery.
Doctors removed both the eel and the lemon, then checked for other foreign objects. The case is now a grim reminder that curiosity can travel faster than common sense.
